About the Maps on this Site

The maps on this site use the Google Maps API, which defines an interface for developing maps that utilize built-in Google Maps functionality, such as zoom and pan controls, and markers that respond to events. In order to develop maps based on this API, it is necessary to incorporate a key into the page containing the map. If you have a Google account, you can get the key, which is a text string, by filling out and submitting a form at the Google Maps API web site. Along with the key, you will be provided with the code for a Simple Google API Example map with your key embedded into it. Each key is specific to a specific URL, and will not function when hosted on another site. Note that the key on the simple example here is:

You can develop more sophisticated maps by building upon the code in the Simple Google API Example, or by using some of the many Google Maps that can be found on the web. You may find it helpful to visit the Google Maps API Discussion Group and the third-party Google Maps API Tutorial.
